| The
Where of Happiness What's That? |
| The where of happiness . . .
|
| An odd phrase you've coined there,
Rich. What is meant by it? |
| Just this. Philosophers since Plato
have penned millions of words attempting to define what is
happiness and fulfillment. |
| Countless more millions of words have
been written on the how of achieving these desirable ends.
Think of all the how-to books published on money, career, health,
diet, fitness, self-esteem, inner peace, six-pack stomachs, and marital
bliss. |
| Life 2.0 is about the where
of finding your happiness and fulfillment. |
| Oddly,where is rarely considered
as an important ingredient to achieving success. Yet asking where
makes sense, when you think about it. A polar bear is unlikely to
find its bliss in a rain forest, no matter how many chances its gets. |
| Now let us count our blessings. |
| America offers by far the richest
selection of location choices to work and to liveto pursue our
American Dream. |
| We can live in New York City,
the one and only. |
| We can live in other "dense"
American cities such as Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. |
| We can chose our cities by size,
by weather, by political tenor (Portland, Ore. is very liberal while
Cincinnati, Ohio is very conservative), by industry, by tax and regulatory
scheme, by schools, by the art scene, by acceptance of racial and
sexual minorities, and by cost of living. |
| We can dwell in the mountains,
put down on the beach, reside on a farm, or repair to the high desert.
Within one city alone, Los Angeles, we can find a richer array of
culture than is offered in some entire countries. |
| After traveling the U.S. by small
airplane during the summers of 2002 and 2003 to gather material and
stories for this book, I am convinced that the where of finding
your happiness might be as important as the how. |
